Spray Alert

An online community for eradicating bogus bug eradication programs.

Attached below here is a letter my wife got back from Governor Schwarzenegger after she urged him to think of our kids health first, and think about the economic costs of this in terms of tourism and real estate, and the collateral costs to our health, environment, and state of mind. I would also add the opportunity costs of not going green and taking the lead in sustainable agriculture. We are what we eat, after all. Our health is our wealth...

Here are some of his comments that I plan to personally respond to:

1. "The light brown apple moth - if uncontrolled - poses a great threat to California's diverse range of agricultural and natural plant life, as well as native and endangered species. If it becomes establishes statewide, the moth would have a devastating impact on our state's environment and economy. "

2. "Unlike pesticides, these pheromones do not kill or even hurt the moth"

3. "The pheromone is undetectable by and does not affect other species - including humans."

4. However, to thoroughly ensure everyone's safety, the aerial spraying has been postponed while CDFA completes what's know as "six-pack" toxicology tests..."

Please comment on his comments and question his answers, and link us to some good information we can use to craft our letters back to him and his key influencers (including his wife, actor friends, and fellow voters).

I was starting to like him for some of his recent green decisions, but I think he is following the money here to get hundreds of millions from the Feds all because we're bamfoozled into accepting this moth is such a "very real threat to our agriculture, environment and economy." And the emperor wears no clothes...

To paragraph #1, I would say, yes, IF uncontrolled, it might pose a threat, but so could anything, if uncontrolled. Nature has a way of dealing with that through checks and balances. Read about natural selection. There is a difference between control and eradication, and the path were on is eradication, a potentially endless war on a moth, requiring drastic weapons of moth destruction.

And the constant reference to the LBAM as "invasive" makes me think it is from outer space. We live on a small planet that is ever-changing. If we have such a problem with "invasive" plants and animals, why do we have so many cows and carrots growing here? Most of our agriculture has it's origins somewhere else.

2. "Unlike pesticides, these pheromones do not kill or even hurt the moth"

As much as I care about all living organisms, I'm not really as concerned about the moth as the ecosystem that sustains us primates that stand upright. And last I checked the EPA definition of "pesticides", it included pheromones. And believe me, the pheromone is the least of my direct worries. It is the other stuff in it. Just because "inert ingredients" aren't "active", doesn't mean they don't have long term health effects. And the delivery mechanism - time released micro-capsules that can get lodged in deep lung tissue, especially of kids that play close to the ground?

Prove it, please. Read "Roy Upton's Final Report on LBAM Spray and Bees"

Even if we can't be convinced one way or the other, the pollinating honeybee population is dropping drastically, and if there is a chance they might be affected by this innocent pheromone, then our "solution" will definitely be worse than the "problem".

Hey Kevin,
This is Mim from veganreader.com
I am completely loving that you've created a social media site for this! Awesome!

My mother received the same form letter from Schwarzenegger. It's all the best lies rolled into one, as it were.

I'm afraid I can't say anything good about this man. If a foreign country announced that they were going to begin aerially assaulting California in X number of days, would he still be grinning? Of course not. That would be an act of 'war'. Why is it any different, at all, that the aggressor happens to be a US agency? The results will be the same for us (the common folk) and Schwarzenegger is so incompetent and corrupt that he is actually willing to let this happen to millions of Californians while he stands there, continuing to grin.

What an actor.

Again, Kevin, I'm really thrilled about the Social Media site. Cool!

Yeah, I got that letter from him also. You make great points in
your reponses Kevin, but I fear it's a waste of time to engage with him
further on this. Unless, of course, you enjoy talking to brick walls.

And I too am glad you created this forum.
Will post again soon in another thread.

Thanks for the comment, Jen. I agree it is like talking to a brick wall, but I think we need to make sure the people that get these letters don't forget to question the answers. These are the typical responses I get from people who are skeptical about our concerns. I've heard many times something to this effect: "Oh, I'm not worried, they are doing their tests and I'm sure they wouldn't spray us if it were harmful." Or, "But what about the economic damage to our crops?" I think as we all talk to people about these issues, we need to ask them why they are so sure it is safe, and why they think this moth is such a big threat. Why do they believe everything this actor says? So far, that is the end of the conversation with the people I talk to...

HI Kevin,

You say: "So far, that is the end of the conversation with the people I talk to..."

Here's how I see it. People are like radios. They literally cannot
"hear" information that they aren't tuned into, and many are simply not ready to hear what's playing on another "channel." Questions such as those you pose about the spraying, for example.

They don't want to investigate or question the decisions of the "powers that be." It's too uncomfortable for them. People don't
change easily when it comes to these matters, they do so in their own time. That's why in my reply to your post about coming up with a new name/tagline, I wrote about cultivating our own positive vision, rather than putting out still more effort to change the world "out there."
